The Gambia U-20 male football team who were recently lost to
Morocco two weeks ago in Cassabalaca has also withdraw from the ongoing
competition and were also fined $1000 by CAF, thus means the team will not be
competing in the second leg of the qualifiers when they should host Morocco on
the 11th August 2012 at the Brikama Box Bar mini stadium.
The
U-20 has joined the list of second Gambian team after the U-17 to withdraw from
CAF qualifying round campaign in the space of a month. This withdrawal was disclosed
to the press and the public on Friday by the vice chairman and the spokesperson
of the GFA normalization committee Alhagie Omar Sey.
According
to the GFA spokesperson Omar Sey said “the reason for the withdrawal of the
U-20 from taking part in the returning leg was as a result of lack of fund to
host the Moroccan team presently and also the team is not the least prepared
for the game. The money needed for the
preparation of the game is more than the money we should give it to the players
for their last match allowances”. Omar
Sey explained.
However,
this paper has confirmed that the defeated U-20 has already plan to boycott the
returning leg in Banjul if their match bonuses remained unpaid. Subsequently
therefore, the GFA normalization committee decided to withdraw the team from
the competition and attributed it to lack of fund available in the GFA complex
and any other place that can bring money for the game.
