2012 was an important year, albeit one of transition. Our profession has not yet found the correct equilibrium after the professional tsunami triggered by the advent of the Internet. In the most recent days the historic monthly news magazine Newsweek has abandoned its printed version to survive online only.
The challenge – The Internet and its ramifications on our profession is still a relatively new challenge and an experiment for us. It is difficult to predict what will be the response of the public – a public that is increasingly distracted and always craves for something that captures the attention and imagination – something that has what they say is charisma or appeal. But first of all the new life of Newsweek will be one to closely follow and see if there is a true revolution in the minds of its journalists and whether or not the public is able to wait a week to get news, insights and comments. And how will the interaction be? Most journalists will be able to reinvent themselves in the new media but this will require a kind of Cultural Revolution for the colleagues whom I shall describe as “more mature”.  It is impossible to give an answer at this time, but by the end of the year we will certainly have other useful indications.

2012 was the very much USA’s year in women’s football, with success at the FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup Japan 2012 coming hot on the heels of Olympic gold. At club level, Lyon swept all before them, while in Sweden a thrilling title race went down to the wire.

FIFA.com looks back on all the year’s action from the women’s game in 2012.

International football
A golden year for USA
Just over a year after losing the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™, USA exacted a measure of revenge against Japan in a repeat of that showdown at London 2012. A brace from Carli Lloyd helped the defending champions secure a third consecutive Olympic gold with a 2-1 victory. Meanwhile, Canada raised a few eyebrows with their performances in London, taking bronze barely a year after their disappointing group stage exit at Germany 2011. Coach John Herdman’s charges got the better of France in the bronze medal match, whetting their appetite for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 on home soil.

SUPER NAWETTAN FRACAS COULD’VE BEEN AVERTED

It would have been one of the best super nawettan championship organised, but it is a shame that another final in the same competition failed to conclude.

Bakau, one of the dominant forces in Gambian football were banned for a whole year after their fans halted a final match against the Serekunda East super nawettan team in a game played at the Serekunda West mini-stadium and were just making their return this year after their place was temporarily occupied by guest team, BEM.

Burkina Faso have become the third African team to have World Cup qualifying points deducted for nationality cheating.

FIFA has awarded Congo a 3-0 win after a 0-0 draw in June in which Burkina Faso fielded Herve Zengue, a Cameroonian defender whom they have controversially continued to use despite repeated doubts over his eligibility.
The world federation’s disciplinary committee also fined the Burkina Faso FA 6,000 Swiss francs.

Namibia protested late last year that Burkina Faso’s use of Zengue in two 2012 African Nations Cup qualifying matches contravened rules on player eligibility.

President Jammeh’s generosity to female U-17 is a way of promoting football but…

Musa Fatty: The author and publisher of this sport blog
The magnificent gesture extended by President of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency-Sheikh Prof Alh Dr. Yahy A.J.J Jammeh to the female U-17 national team by giving D100, 000 to each player, D50, 000 to the technical team as well as D10, 000 and 5000 monthly salaries to the coach and players respectively, who participated in the recently concluded U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan, is one of the quickest possible ways to improve both female and male football in the country.

But however, it can also lead to the total failure of female football in the nearest future if the authorities responsible for our Gambia football affair misinterpreted the initiative of the president by wrongly selecting the unfit and underperform players in the next selection campaign of female national teams, because every one will like his/her daughter to grape President Jammeh’ one hundred thousand (D100, 000) or even more in the subsequent tournaments if Gambia qualified for.

The LA Galaxy will never fully replace David Beckham, but that doesn't mean they won't try anyway.

While LA might be able to find a player with similar ability on the pitch, it's simply impossible to replace the cachet, marketability and global recognition that Beckham brought to MLS. Absolutism aside, everybody knows David Beckham. The same won't be true for his successor.
