Standard Chartered Bank
Gambia Ltd on Sunday held a match-viewing of Liverpool Football Club’s crucial
returning leg of the English Premier League against third-place holders Chelsea
FC, as part of the international bank’s sponsorship agreement with the club
over the years.
The viewing ceremony
organised by SCB was held at the Sheraton Resort and Spa in Brufut.
Liverpool was held to a
2-2 draw after coming from behind twice to level the scores through Luis Suárez.
The injury-time goal,
being the most significant of all, allowed the Reds to share points with
Chelsea at the crucial stage of the premier league table.
Liverpool are struggling not to drop beyond the
position of UEFA junior championship stage, while Chelsea are also trying to
maintain their position in the first three of the table in order to play Europe
champions league, after their poor performance in this year’s competition as
defending champions.
In his remarks on the match-viewing ceremony, SCB Managing Director Humphrey Mukwereza said: “In 2010, the bank saw a need to raise its profile and brand visibility across Asia, Africa and Middle East, through the sponsorship of Liverpool Football Club - a key contender in the English Premiership.

Mr Mukwereza said
further: “Standard Chartered and Liverpool FC are both organisations with long
histories and successful international track records. It was, therefore,
befitting that the two should come together and use the common platform of
football to share a relationship that is beneficial to all.
“Liverpool have driven
positive appraisal of the Standard Chartered brand amongst our own people, and
with our external stakeholders. It has also brought more focus to our CSR
initiatives.
“Viewing of this match
this afternoon is an extension of that relationship; today we host our clients,
some members of the Liverpool Gambia fans club and [SCB] staff to a viewing
event of premiership game between Liverpool and Chelsea.

customers who are here with us today. We aim to build stronger relationship

business, but we have to get even better: more committed and more responsive.”

level of the ministry they are trying to improve the local leagues to the best
standard, which he noted, can attract high turnout of spectators.
“If banks like Standard
Chartered Bank come forward to support clubs to make it more rewarding, players
can enjoy the benefits of playing the game, especially those within the same
team.
