The Baby Scorpions are
non-participants in this 10th edition having pulled out in the
eleventh hour incurring a fine of $1000 USD in the process by CAF. Gambia won
the U-17 title in 2005 and 2009. The 10th CAF U-17 championship gets
underway in Morocco starting this weekend with hosts taking on Gabon in Group A
match to be played at Complexe Sportif Mohammed V stadium in Casablanca on
Saturday 13th April at 1500hrs local time.
The tournament’s second match will
take place at the same venue at 18h: 30 when Tunisia and Botswana compete the
Group A first games. Group B will kick off the following day in Marrakech with
Congo and Ivory Coast opening the proceedings at Grand Stade de Marrakech at
15h00 before Ghana and Nigeria clash at 18h30.
At stake at this tournament is not
only the chance to replace Burkina Faso (who did not qualify to defend their
title) as the reigning African champions but the semi-finalists will get to
represent the continent at the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in United Arab
Emirates from 17 October to 8 November 2013.
