YMCA basketball team
has beaten Wallidan 47-36 points, to stay three points lead ahead of their
title contenders Wallidan, at the Manneh Sillah Memorial Basketball Court in
Banjul last weekend.
The winners were very
impressive in the first quarter of the game, with their fans cheering them up.
They were defensively better than their opponents in the game.
YMCA continued their
magnificent performance in the second quarter of the game, with a 34-18-point
win over Wallidan. The game was very
attractive, in terms of skillful play from both sides, especially YMCA with
their young talented players.
Wallidan made some
progressive performance in the third quarter of the game, after closing the
points to 7 points behind the leaders. They however failed to maintain it in
the last quarter of the game which ended (47-36) in favour of YMCA.
The loser’s coach
Halifa Faal said the referees played a part in their defeat.
“I blame the referees,
because they contributed a part to our defeat here. I had three fouls in the
first half but they refused to award it to us,” he said. “It’s game; you either
win or lose, but we had a good performance, and there was no pressure on us.”
Halifa said he had had
his toughest game against YMCA so far in this year’s league competition. “I
have realised my mistakes; we will keep our faith in our coming games and
secure victories.”
YMCA coach Foday Singhateh,
in his comments on the game, said: “It’s a good performance from my players,
and the atmosphere was good. It was only six players who played the game today,
the rest were not fit to play.”
They would keep the momentum
in their subsequent games, he said, whilst appealing for more referees to officiate
their games competently without fair or favour.
In the other fixtures
of the day, Brikama United basketball team defeated Serrekunda East basketball
team in the ongoing league with (56-41) points respectively.
YMCA are leading the
race with 18 points in six games, seconded by Wallidan with 15 points in six
games.
In today’s fixtures, 15
March 2013, YMCA will take on Saints at 4pm, Serrekunda East against Wallidan
at 5pm and Serrekunda West versus The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) at 6pm, all the
games will be played at the Independence Stadium Basketball Court.
