Abdoulie
Njie (Njie-Goree Promotions), a new state-of-the-Art entertainment and promotional
organisation, last Saturday held a wrestling championship at the Serrekunda West
Mini-Stadium, which coincided with the occasion marking the celebration of President
Yahya Jammeh’s 48th birthday.
The
organization plans to revive the nation’s rich cultural heritage, through
enhancing youths’ participation in wrestling.
President
Jammeh, it is said, has been the number one supporter of the (Njie Goree
Promotions) initiative.
Speaking
at the programme, Modou Kara Gaye, a member of the Njie Goree Promotions, welcomed
and thanked their sponsors, such as Africell, Gambia Bird, Warga Tabara, and
Best and Panther from Senegal, for stepping in to revive the culture, through
organising grand wrestling such as this.
Alpha
Jallow, a member of the Gambia Wrestling Journalist Association, shed light on
the achievements of Njie Goree Promotions
within this short period of time, which he added, has shown that the youth are
willing to participate in the event.
Njie
Goree said investing millions in wrestling will never be a loss, because the
more he is taking the initiative forward, the more youths will show their interest
in participating in it. He
also advised the wrestlers to take the game seriously.
The
winner ‘Tassa Yaram’ after 4 minutes of holding his opponent tight, was able to
defeat him by dropping him on the ground.
Speaking
to journalists after the wrestling, he expressed delight at the victory, saying
it’s something he knew he could do because of constant training and the skills
he has in wrestling.
He
would always try to help complement the efforts of Njie Goree, as he puts it: “Njie
Goree is doing a lot and he is willing and ready to work with them to take the
initiative forward.”
The
date for the next wrestling by the Gambia Wrestling Association Arena (Buffer
zone) is scheduled for 15 and 16 of June 2013.
