Gambia’s last remaining team in continental club
competition, Gamtel FC, will play Tunisian side Club Sportif Sfaxien in the
first round proper of the African Confederations Cup after their prelimanary round
progress at the weekend MarketPlace sports desk can confirmed.
The
telecomunication boys who won the last three consecutive FA Cup titles secured
a 5-2 aggregate win over Senegalese Cup winnerss Asslem Wakam at the weekend to
book a place in the next stage of the competition. Defending a 2-1 lead from
the first leg in Banjul a fortnight ago, Tapha Manneh’s team beat their hosts
3-1 on the night.
Hamang
Conteh was the hero from the first leg with a brace and this time forward Hatab
Badjie announced himself on the international stage with two goals in
Dakar with Modou Sarr scoring the third.
Like
in the first leg, the Gambian outfit could have thrashed the Senegalese side
but were undone by profligacy in front of goal.
Now
they are through to the next stage of the competition, it is a tough task
against a Tunisian side that has been in existence for 85 years this year and
was called Club Tunisien. The first leg is scheduled to take place in the
weekend of 15-17 March at the Stade Taïeb Mhiri stadium in Sfax with the return
leg a fortnight later in Banjul.
Sfaxien
who finished third in the Tunisian league last year is one of the biggest clubs
in the North African country and no strangers to CAF competitions either.
Amongst several accolades they have won are seven Tunisian league titles, Four
Tunisian President’s Cup and One Tunisian League Cup title.
They
have also made two appearances in the competition proper of the CAF Champions
League and were runners-up to Al Ahly in 2006. They also won the now defunct
CAF Cup once and two winners medal at the Confederations Cup in 2007 and 2008
