Business Newspaper Sports desk has it that, The Gambia government in
collaboration with ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development department will for the
first time host a four-nation Tournament in African Traditional Wrestling. The two
days event is expected to run from the 23rd to 25th November 2012.
The aim and objective of the tournament, according to
Mamudou Max Jallow executive secretary of the National Sports Council, is to
sustain traditional and national sports, as well as complement efforts of
ECOWAS to cement the integration of ECOWAS member states.
The participating countries are drawn from Nigeria, Niger,
Senegal and The Gambia. Each country according to the release is allowed to
bring only 5 wrestlers in the categories of 120kg, 100kg, 86kg, 76kg, &
66kg, one coach and one head of delegation to attend the event.
The Gambia Wrestling Association, according to the NSC press
release, will select the best wrestlers to represent the country, as well as
work with the National Sports Council to ensure the event is well coordinated
as expected.
“The general public is kindly requested to contact the
National Sports Council Secretariat for partnership or sponsorship. ‘’We are
expecting huge media coverage to promote the first Four-Nation Super Tournament
in African Traditional Wrestling to be held in our beloved country. Our sincere
appreciation goes to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for endorsing this
tournament with blessing from the Office of the President,” the release further
stated. ECOWAS is expected to be represented by a high-power delegation.
