The first edition of the
Youth and Sports Summer Camp organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports for
youths from across the seven administrative regions of the country was Saturday
officially opened at the Friendship Hostel in Bakau by Hon. Alieu K. Jammeh,
Minister of Youth and Sports.
Declaring the camp open, Minister Jammeh thanked
President Jammeh and his government for creating the enalbing environment for
such a camp to be possible. He disclosed that the government through his
Ministry donated D300, 000 for the successful organising of the camp, while
assuring that the government will continue to give support to the cause of
youths and children. He also thanked parents for entrusting their children with
them.
Minister Jammeh assured that the camp will be of great
benefit to the participants, while thanking all those who in one way or the
other supported them in kind or cash.
Speaking earlier, Suute Jawo, deputy director of
Youth, said they have also collaborated with other ministries such as Health,
Basic and Secondary Education, Interior, and Tourism and Culture.
Pa Suwareh Faye, acting director of Youth and Sports,
said the camp is part of his Ministry’s 2010-2019 youth and sports policies and
programmes of action to ensure excellence in sports through mass participation
and to develop, equip and train a youthful population who are the engine of the
socio-economic growth.
For his part Mr. Bun Njie, chairman of the National
Sports Council, also said said motivation can make a difference in the lives of
the children, while encouraging them to believe in themselves in order to
overcome fear.
